Lena Whitmore Mission and Beliefs

     School Mission
Lena Mission Statement Lena Whitmore School is a partnership dedicated to the academic and personal success of every child.

     Beliefs
Lena Whitmore Elementary School is an exciting & thriving community of dedicated learners. In collaboration with students, teachers and parents, we have forged a strong partnership that is dedicated to the academic and personal success of each of our students. Here we honor and celebrate ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity. Assisted by parent and community volunteers, we take full advantage of the wisdom and educational experience of those who have become part of our valued Lena family.

University students serve in our midst as tutors, instructional aides, or pre-service teachers. Our staff members have continually honed their skills and have dedicated themselves to the students and parents whom they serve. Our parents and teachers have created a warm, loving and safe environment for all children. Since we believe that life is an exciting journey of learning and discovery, we seek to give our students responsibility for their own learning.

Our instructional programs often take our students far beyond the standards required by our District and State. Our academic programs are second to none and the students of our school typically score at the high end of local, state, regional and national levels. We have a unique program of instruction for our students and provide acceleration whenever possible.

The adults within our building and community are committed to the notion that students need a safe and loving environment if they are to become the life-long learners that good citizenship demands. Individual and group qualities of honesty, excellence, leadership, tolerance, compassion, and personal achievement are continually emphasized in an effort to create a greater appreciation for our nation's values, heritage and legacy.

Within this set of guiding principles, our students are taught to be unselfish and considerate of others. Community service and work-force skills are continually emphasized in an effort to make our students’ education more meaningful and relevant in a competitive and forever changing world. Our students are taught a work ethic that includes creativity, independence, motivation, organizational skill, responsibility and dependability. Children are taught to value authority, hard work and the satisfaction that comes from personal accomplishment.

As a school, we seek to provide our students with a basic education that will provide them with the tools they will need to be successful in their lives and future undertakings. Workforce skills of communication and negotiation are continually emphasized and practiced. Our students frequently work within small groups where effective dialogue becomes essential for success. Technology is employed as a tool to enhance learning and students are frequently taught to visualize their thoughts and concepts within multi-media formats and visual programming.

Students are also taught the importance of assuming an active role as citizens of our school, city, state, region, nation and world. Events and concerns within these realms are frequently studied for their importance and relevance to our lives and education.

In summary then, the students, parents and teachers of our school are committed to the notion of "life-long" learning. As we anticipate and participate in the challenges of the current century, we do so with much eagerness and anticipation. As a faculty, we live by the words of the late Christa McCauliffe who said, "We touch the future, we teach!"
