MUSIC

Philosophy

Since the dawn of civilization, men and women have used music and the other arts to transmit their heritage and express their deepest feelings of beauty, joy, and sorrow. This and other artistic expression is often said to be the true means by which a civilization is measured.

For this reason, music and the other arts must be considered a part of the core of common learning which is based upon mankind's consequential ideas, experience, and traditions. This unique form of knowledge is critical to a well-rounded education. It embodies a holistic thinking which gives emphasis to affective development as well as cognitive and psychomotor development.

Music is a class for all students. It must not be viewed as merely a fun thing, a frill, or as a relief from academic subjects. Music's relevancy must be within the context of the total school, community, and the life of every student.
