PHYSICAL EDUCATION - GRADES 10-12

Critical Components

In order to satisfy the state graduation requirement, physical education (grades 10-12) should deal significantly with:

I. Psychomotor Development

A.    Goal:

Students will develop their physical efficiency.

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop adequate health-related fitness components including muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, and postural control.

2. perform skills necessary to maintain and improve physical fitness on a regular basis.

3. display proper mechanics in static and dynamic activities.

B. Goal:

Students will further develop basic motor control.

Objectives:

Students will

1. improve motor fitness inadequacies including static and dynamic balance abilities, agility, and eye-hand/eye-foot coordination

2. demonstrate rhythmic coordination in a variety of physical activities and work to strengthen weak areas.

3. practice remedial movements required for any underdeveloped motor skills.

C. Goal:

Students will continue to develop skills required for participation in selected sports, games and activities.

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop sport and activity skills from among the following recommended activities:

(Continuing instruction in activities previously introduced) junior high course should be carefully planned to avoid needless repetition.)

II. Cognitive Development

A.    Goal:

Students will understand how to play games and sports.

Objectives:

Students will

1.demonstrate knowledge of historical background, rules, and advanced procedures, terms, and strategies applied to activities in the physical education program.

2. demonstrate and apply knowledge of proper equipment selection, consumer implications, care and repair of equipment utilized in physical education activities.

3. analyze their performances in order to improve skills.

4. demonstrate and recognize safety considerations for participation in activities related to physical education

5. select and use appropriate attire for participation in various physical activities.

6. adapt games and sports according to player needs.

7. modify games and sports to playing conditions.

8. develop their own games and activities.

9. demonstrate knowledge of injury prevention and treatment principles and effectively utilize appropriate procedures.

B. Goal:

Students will demonstrate and apply knowledge of movement principles, fitness concepts and advanced performance strategies.

Objectives:

Students will

1. apply, analyze and synthesize the mechanical principles of motor skills and movement patterns, e.g., opposition, balance, kinesthesis, accuracy, timing, synchrony, flow, form, force, power and speed.

2. analyze, evaluate and apply the principles of fitness/wellness components for the purpose of developing a personal fitness/wellness program.

3. analyze, evaluate and synthesize for personal references the contribution of activities to the maintenance of lifelong fitness/wellness.

4. select activities for lifelong benefits based on knowledge and appreciation of fitness/wellness concepts.

5. recognize personally stressful conditions, understand the role of physical activity as a technique for stress management and choose stress management procedures.

6. demonstrate and apply knowledge of the relationship of human anatomy and physiology to fitness.

7. demonstrate and apply knowledge of principles of nutrition and weight control as related to body composition and physical activity.

8. understand the relationship of rest and relaxation to total fitness and practically apply relaxation techniques.

9. locate and utilize a range of resources related to physical education activities.

10. identify and evaluate school and community resources for development of a plan for additional psychomotor activity.

11. establish and achieve realistic performance goals.

C. Goal:

Students will develop an understanding of the values of physical activity, games and sports.

Objectives:

Students will

1. utilize opportunities for self-expression and self-realization provided by physical activity.

2. appreciate the value of physical activity in reducing tension and coping with stress,.

3. experience positive socialization opportunities through physical activity, sports and games.

4. understand the value of physical activity in relation to the growth and developmental process.

5. understand the value of physical activity in relation to personal fitness/wellness.

6. understand the cultural and historical significance of sport.

III. Affective Development

A.    Goal:

Students will develop social interaction characteristics and personal conduct codes through participation in physical activities, games and sports.

Objectives:

Students will

1. demonstrate positive group dynamic behavior at a mature level.

a. display good leadership/followership skills.

b. effectively contribute to group goal setting.

c. display a cooperative attitude and appreciate the value of teamwork.

d. accept individual differences.

e. further develop decision-making abilities.

2. further develop emotional self-control.

3. develop a maturing ethical framework of respect for others, sportsmanship, honesty and fair play.

4. establish a healthy self-concept based on successful movement and play experiences.

B. Goal:

Students will demonstrate approach tendencies toward physical activity, games and sports.

Objectives:

Students will

1. enthusiastically continue participation in a variety of school and non-school physical education activities.

2. choose activities voluntarily and express enjoyment and satisfaction through successful participation.

3. display a positive attitude toward physical activity and personal skill development.

4. display an appreciation for excellence in physical performance.

5. display a positive attitude toward the lifelong maintenance of fitness and actively participate in a personal fitness program.

6. develop an appreciation of physical education activities as techniques for managing stress and utilize appropriate methods of stress reduction.

7. strive for excellence while participating in physical activity.

8. develop an appreciation for the leisure use of physical activity.
