Critical Components

In order to satisfy the state requirement, physical education (grades 7-9) should deal significantly with:

· Psychomotor Development

· Cognitive Development

· Affective Development

I. Psychomotor Development

Goal:

Students will develop their physical efficiency.

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop adequate functional muscular strength and endurance.

2. develop increased cardiorespiratory endurance.

3. develop static and dynamic flexibility.

4. develop efficient postural control.

5. demonstrate proper mechanics in static and dynamic activities.

B. Goal:

Students will develop basic motor control

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop static and dynamic balance.

2. develop large-muscle coordination (agility).

3. develop ability in manipulative skill activities (dexterity).

4. develop eye-hand and eye-foot coordination.

5. develop rhythmic movement patterns.

C. Goal:

Students will develop their motor skills.

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop basic motor skill patterns (locomotor movements).

2. develop object control.

3. develop basic kicking, striking, throwing, and catching skills.

4. develop power and speed in their movements.

D. Goal:

Students will demonstrate the basic skills necessary to participate in selected sports, games, and activities.

II. Cognitive Development

A.    Goal

Students will understand how to play games and sports.

Objectives

Students will

1. demonstrate knowledge of historical background, terms, basic rules, procedures and strategies in the physical education program

2. analyze their performances in order to improve skills.

3. adapt games and sports according to player needs.

4. modify games and sports to playing conditions.

5. develop their own games and activities.

6. demonstrate knowledge of proper selection, consumer implications, care and use of equipment in activities.

7. demonstrate proper care and use of attire for various physical activities.

8. demonstrate safety considerations for participation.

9. understand and apply injury prevention and treatment principles.

B. Goal:

Students will demonstrate knowledge of movement principles, fitness concepts, and performance strategies.

Objectives:

Students will

1. demonstrate knowledge of mechanical principles of motor skills and movement patterns, e.g., laterality, balance, spatial awareness, accuracy, timing, synchrony, flow, form, and force.

2. analyze and compare contributions of activities to the maintenance of lifelong fitness/wellness.

3. demonstrate knowledge of fitness components and their contributions to emotional and physical health.

4. demonstrate knowledge of the relationship of anatomy and physiology to fitness.

5. demonstrate knowledge of principles of nutrition and weight control as related to body composition and physical activity.

6. comprehend the relationship of rest and relaxation to total fitness.

7. demonstrate knowledge of misconceptions and myths about exercise and training.

8. develop a plan to utilize school and community resources for additional psychomotor activity.

9. locate a broad range of resources related to physical education activities.

C. Goal:

Students will develop an understanding of the values of physical activity, games, and sports

Objectives

Students will

1. utilize opportunities for self-expression provided by physical activity.

2. utilize physical activity and relaxation techniques to reduce muscular tension.

3. experience positive social interaction through physical activity, sports, and games.

4. understand the value of physical activity in relation to the growth and developmental process

5. understand the value of physical activity in relation to personal fitness/wellness.

6. understand the cultural and historical significance of sport.

III Affective Development

A.    Goal:

Students will develop social interaction characteristics and personal conduct codes through participation in physical activities, games, and sports.

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop a cooperative attitude.

2. develop an understanding of the importance of teamwork.

3. develop leadership/followership skills.

4. develop basic decision-making abilities.

5. accept individual differences.

6. develop emotional self-control.

7. develop and practice an ethical framework demonstrating respect for others, sportsmanship, honesty, and fair play.

8. participate within an environment designed to enhance self-esteem through successful experiences.

9. contribute to group goal setting.

B.    Goal

Students will develop approach tendencies toward physical activity, games, and sports.

Objectives:

Students will

1. develop an enjoyment of physical activity displaying a positive attitude toward physical activity and personal skill development.

2. develop an appreciation for the importance of lifelong fitness activity and display a positive attitude toward the lifelong maintenance of fitness.

3. enthusiastically participate in a variety of school and non-school physical activities.

4. develop an appreciation of physical education activities as techniques for managing stress.

5. enjoy striving for excellence while participating in physical activity.

6. develop an appreciation for the leisure-time use of physical activity.

7. develop an appreciation for high level performances.
