Brian Smith High fiving a student

Moscow, ID — This spring episode of the Moscow School District Community Schools Podcast shines a spotlight on the district’s kindergarten programs, offering families a warm and informative introduction to the first step in their child’s educational journey.

Hosted by Brian Smith, principal of Paradise Creek Regional High School and community school coordinator, the podcast features three dedicated kindergarten teachers: Brandi Urie (McDonald Elementary), Jillian Ochoa (West Park Elementary), and Asher Johnson (Lena Whitmore Elementary). The episode was recorded in the district’s new podcast studio at Moscow High School, made possible by the Nez Perce Tribe Local Education Fund Grant.

The episode, titled “Everything Kindergarten,” explores what families can expect when enrolling their children in kindergarten. From classroom routines to first-day jitters, the educators share heartfelt stories and practical advice to help ease the transition for both students and parents. Each teacher also reflected on their journey through the district—from student teaching to full-time roles—highlighting the strong sense of community and support that defines the Moscow School District.

“You kind of get hooked,” said Brandi Urie, describing the welcoming culture and collaborative spirit that keeps educators rooted in the district.

The podcast encourages families to reach out to their neighborhood schools with questions about kindergarten enrollment. As Smith emphasized, “You can call any school in this district and say, ‘This is where I live, I’d love to learn more about the kindergarten program,’ and we’ll get you to the right people.”
