Citation Guidelines K-2

Students need to give credit for the resources they have used, even in elementary school. Here are some simplified guidelines for elementary school students based on MLA format which they will use in Middle and High School.

There is a Citation Maker available on the website EasyBib. Students type in the information, and the site generates a citation that can be copied and pasted into a Works Cited page, however this gives the full citation record, not the simplified one as listed below. Just identify the type of source - Book, Computer, People, Me - and use a graphic approach (e.g., picture, stamp, icon, sticker).

For Grades 1&2

(Use italics when typing citations, underline when writing.)

Book
1. Name of author.
2. Title of the book (Italicized).
3. year book was published (grade 2 only)

Print Encyclopedia Article
1. Name of the article.
2. Name of the encyclopedia (Italicized).
3. The year the encyclopedia or book was published. (grade 2 only)

Online Encyclopedia Article
1. Name of the article.
2. Name of the encyclopedia (Italicized).
3. Date last updated (day month year)(grade 2 only)
